Driving a REAL heritage tram on a REAL operating tramway

We are the only destination in the UK that you can drive a REAL heritage tram on a REAL operating tramway and what’s more, this experience is in the hometown and birthplace of the electric tram.
The tramway was opened in 1885 and is still going strong following an upgrade and introduction of new low-floor accessible trams to allow the tramway to meet modern needs and take comfort and the customer experience to a new level.
A selection of original trams built from the 1900’s onwards were retained and still operate seamlessly amongst the modern fleet providing nostalgic heritage promenade tours throughout the year.

Blackpool is absolutely unique in that it has the first and only continuously operating electric tramway in the UK and we can offer you the opportunity to come and drive one of our fleet of heritage trams.
You can even bring along your own passengers – up to 4 – to share the experience of being driven by you up and down the famous Blackpool Prom.

Your day is an individual experience though we can also arrange a two-participant slightly longer day if you want to come with a friend – you’ll find details below.
You will start your day with a full safety briefing, an introduction to the tramway, familiarisation of the tram itself and your driving experience will be on the section of tramway between Pleasure Beach and Little Bispham. You will drive for a full three hours in total during the day. The tram used will normally be one of the ‘B’ fleet double deck Balloon trams originally built around 1934.
Your experience will start at 09:30 with an introduction and breakfast roll and will finish at 15:30. Your lunch and refreshments during the day are also included.
Each participant will receive a special workshop tour, a selection of exclusive ‘REAL DRIVE’ souvenirs, and a framed course certificate.
You are very welcome to bring up to four companions who can join your tram at our northbound North Pier & Tower Heritage stop and travel as passengers on board. They can join us for lunch and at the end of the day will see you presented with your certificate.
We can accommodate two drivers on the day by starting at a slightly earlier time (08:30) and finishing around 17:00. You will each get your full three hours of driving and your own exclusive souvenirs – in fact it will be exactly the same as an individual experience but with two of you.
To participate in a drive, you must hold a current and valid full UK driving licence (not provisional) issued by the DVLA, be no older than 70, meet the car driving eyesight standard (with glasses or contact lenses if worn) and be physically fit.
A medical declaration must be signed by participants and there will be a simple eyesight check on the day.

A £50 non-refundable deposit is required to secure the booking.
The remaining balance must be paid at least 14 days before of the experience date and, once paid, is non-refundable. If unforeseen circumstances cause the day to be altered or curtailed, then we will rearrange to another mutually agreeable date.
Gift Vouchers are available in denominations of £50
The REAL DRIVE costs £450 per participant.
If you wish, you can increase the time of your driving from 3 hours to 6 hours at an additional cost of £350. Your day will then start at 08:30 and finish around 17:00. This option is not available if you are sharing your day with another driving friend.
The fare for your optional passenger guests (maximum 4) is £10 each which includes drinks and refreshments.
